Information for Presenters
Thank you for submitting an abstract to give a presentation at the upcoming “Beyond Borders” conference hosted by the Society for Ecological Restoration Northwest and B.C. Chapters, the American Fisheries Society Washington-B.C. Chapter, and the University of Victoria (UVic) Restoration of Natural Systems Program. Beyond Borders will be held at UVic in Victoria, B.C. May 15th to 18th, 2012. We invite you to attend the entire conference and experience the plethora of workshops, courses, and field trips. Please periodically check the conference website for updates at www.restoration2012.org!
As you develop your presentation, a few key points to keep in mind:
- Talks are to be no more than 20 minutes long followed by a 5-minute question-and-answer period. There will be a 5-minute set-up slot between talks. It is important to keep on time as the talks will be in different buildings on the UVic campus and the audience will require a few minutes to travel between them. The session chairs will make sure you are on track!
- Limit use of detailed data tables. Too many detailed tables can distract from the presentation and can be difficult to understand by folks at the back of the room. Simplified graphs and graphics are usually appreciated by attendees;
- Limit the number of words on slides as much as possible. The text on your PowerPoint slide should be clearly readable from the back of the room (+/-10 m away). This means that font sizes should be no smaller than 24 point, and preferably 28-32 point;
- A picture is worth 1,000 words. Photographs or drawings illustrating your points speak volumes. Humans have the ability to take in a visual image much faster than a spoken word;
- Humor/Humour is always appropriate in images and/or text.
Please bring your completed talk to the conference on a USB memory stick. When you come to your session, please identify yourself to the session chair. You will be able to load your presentations ~30 minutes before your session, and the file should have your name included. You should also allow sufficient time to test it on the presentation computer so there are no unpleasant surprises during your talk. We would prefer that you use the laptops provided and not your own, so if you have embedded video, etc., please make sure it will play on the computers provided. We will be using a Windows 7 platform and PowerPoint 2010 for the presentations, so please provide compatible formats (e.g., PowerPoint 2003, 2007, 2010). In particular, please note that Macintosh formats must be PC compatible, as we will not have Macs on hand. Thank you for planning accordingly.
We are looking forward to an exciting conference with many interesting talks, including yours! Please do not hesitate to contact us at jjensen [at] anchorqea [dot] com or john [dot] morgan [at] viuc [dot] ca should you have any questions.
Poster Guidelines
Greetings Poster Session presenters! Thanks so much for taking the time to present your work and helping to make this meeting great! Here are some reminders/guidelines to assist you with preparing your posters:
Poster Objective
The purpose of the poster should be to convey highlights of a study or project in an attractive format that can be easily read and comprehended in a short period of time, i.e., 3 to 5 minutes.
Poster Design Suggestions
Posters will be mounted to 121.9 cm square (48”x48”) rolling tack boards so consider these dimensions as the maximum size of your poster. We will supply materials for mounting the posters to the boards.
Minimize the amount of text in the poster. Using bulleted phrases rather than complete sentences is recommended.
- The title should be short and fit across top of poster on one line. Authors’ names and affiliations should appear below the title.
- Fonts must be large enough to be readable from a distance of 3 ft. The following font sizes are recommended:
- Title – 72 point or larger, kept short.
- Authors’ names and affiliations – 48 point.
- Section headings – 36 point, bold.
- Text – 28 point.
- Graphs and tables – all numbers and labels 28 point or larger.
- Graph bars and symbols – use colors; avoid cross hatching.
- Acknowledgments – 20 to 24 point
