Students are an integral part of both the American Fisheries Society and the Society of Ecological Restoration and they bring the newest ideas as well as energy and enthusiasm to annual meetings. It is also a well known fact that graduate students are the fuel that drives the engine of any university research lab! Beyond Borders 2012 will be a great opportunity for students to not only present their latest research results, but also network with colleagues and future employers. The UVic campus is also a great place to meet friends both old and new – and Victoria has some of the best brewpubs in BC!
Some of the items that may be of particular interest to students are summarized below.
Travel Scholarship
Travel scholarships are available to both WA-BC AFS Chapter and SER NW students to help with travel, registration and accommodation costs at the meeting. Please fill out the appropriate application forms below and submit to the contact person indicated on the forms. The application deadline is March 25 and can be submitted by email. Preference will be given to students that are presenting at the meeting.
SER-BC students can contact Jeff Ralph (jralph [at] uvic [dot] ca) concerning assistance.
Awards for Best Talk and Poster
There will be cash awards for best oral presentation and poster for student members of both the WA-BC AFS Chapter and SER. The student awards will be presented at the Chapter business lunch meetings on Thursday, May 17.
If you are an undergraduate or graduate student, make sure that you select the student category when registering to be eligible for these awards!
Volunteer Opportunities
There will opportunities for students to help out at the meeting, including assisting with audio-visuals during the presentations, helping out at the registration table, and as campus guides to help out with directions, etc. This is a great way to meet and interact with Chapter members and make contacts for your future careers!
There will be a Student Volunteer breakfast at the beginning of the conference to help you get organized for your duties. Student volunteers will also receive a registration waiver and complimentary conference t-shirt. Mentoring Mixer
Join Fisheries and Ecological Restoration Professionals in an informal session to discuss career paths and opportunities following graduation. Representatives from government, private industry, ENGO’s and academia will be on hand and eager to share their stories of getting that great job after school, as well discuss current and future job prospects with their agencies and organizations.
The Student Mentoring Mixer will be held Thursday, May 17 from 5-7pm in the Cadboro Commons on the UVic campus. A no-host bar will be provided to help stimulate the discussion.
